I have finishing reviewing the prices of all our yeast. I was able to bring
some of the distiller's yeast prices down while the dry yeast for yeast
remained unchanged.
Unfortunately most of these prices of beer yeast went up with a few exceptions. The adjustment were brought about by the dramatic increase by our supplier of the yeast from DC Labs out of England which markets under the brand of Safale, Safbrew and Saflager. That product line almost double in price which is outrageous. We celebrated National Homebrew Day by hosting the Carolina Brewmasters in our park on the Catawba River
at our Belmont warehouse. We had a good turn out considering the weather forecast for thunderstorms, PGA
Golf tournament held in Charlotte and a beer festival in the Carolinas.
We collected $127 in donations that we will double and give to the American Cancer Society. | ||||||||||||||||

Rhizomes arrived on the 31st of March. Sterling, Saaz and a couple others were quarantined
and not allowed to be harvested. We have been shipping them out as quickly as possible.
We do have a couple hundred left and they do look better than last year for the most part. We will not be able to get any more this year so buy up now. | ||||||||||||||||

We finished installing the shelving. Now we just need to clean it up before the product starts to arrive. The counter still needs to be sanded down before it can be stained. I ordered the shelving this morning and picked it up this afternoon. Our truck was so loaded down, I was afraid it would break the springs. The Crisis of 2008
The latest hurdle that I have gotten is a shocker. My main supplier of glass carboys has just informed me that the price of glass carboys is escalating in price by almost 33% immediately. The North American manufacturer of glass carboys is closing shop, leaving the business sector with no competition from the Italian glass manufacturers. Oh, there will not be any more 6.5 gallons for a long time - no one is making them now. My NEW cost are higher than the price I was selling carboys. I received a shipment today so my prices are having to go up today. As much as I like to keep my prices down, this hurts. I would suggest that you find carboys and buy them before the prices jump dramatically
over the next few of days.

Hop Shortage
In spite to the hop crisis of 2008, we are now able to offer a few selected hops in limited quantities. We are willing sell 2-3 ounces of hops per 5-gallon batch when purchasing an adequate quantity of malts for each batch. We will sell a maximum total of 6-9 ounces of hops per customer on this basis. | ||||||||||||||||

Today I was able post some new wine kits that I think you will be find to great
additions to our inventory.
2007 Selection Limited Edition kits - These 16-liter kits will be some of the best kits that you'll ever make. Traditionally, these wines win lots of awards. Consider them while they last - there will be no more. Vintner's Reserve World Vineyard kits - These are 10-liter from various internationally respected are a step above the regular Vintner's Reserve kits. Vino del Vida World Tour kits - These 10-liter kits supplement a very extensive selection of kits in Vino del Vida lines. Orchard Breezin' kits - These 7-liter kits from RJ Spagnol are in direct competition with the fine wines of Island Mist from Winexpert. The Calypso Bianco is one of my favorites. Over the last few weeks, the price of Dried Malt Extract has gone up in price by
about 24%. Couple this increase with rising prices on hops and malt and we are on the
verge of seeing major changes in the prices of all packages and ingredients.

With the problems that I have had with the server, I have been unable to access the website so I was unable to get the SPECIALS loaded. The server is still working fine. We start getting orders outs again and things start processing
like normal.
My IT guy came in about 3pm. I was so grateful to see him, it is like having a weight lifted off my shoulders. He examined the server and found that 1 of our six hard drives is going bad and is creating the problem. He shut it down and did a little fine tuning and gave us a clean bill of health. He gave me assurance that our data was safe and protected at all times. | ||||||||||||||||

This is the day that no business looks forward to - the day that the server hangs up, has to
be rebooted and doesn't come back up like it is suppose to do. It hangs on "loading your
personally settings" for 6 hours - 6 long hours. We had to reboot about 9:30 and it didn't come
up until 3:30. In the mean time, we are taking orders by hand, trying to stay busy making up
products, and trying to get in touch with our IT guy who is still out of town on assignment. I
could use a beer, a big beer.
Around 3:30 - 4pm, the server completes its startup routine and everything starts working fine. Only trouble is, I had sent everyone home a half an hour earlier. I talk to my IT guy and he will be in Friday afternoon. | ||||||||||||||||

walking on egg shells.

We started April Fools day by finding that our "server" had lost everything that we had
done on March 31st. All the orders that had come in over the week-end had to be re-entered,
all the orders that had been shipped had to be painstakingly reprocessed to prevent duplicate
orders and dupicate charges. We lost about 16 man hours but we put 4 people on the problem
and only lost a half day of work.
My IT was out of town so we were on our own. | ||||||||||||||||

I made a couple of phone calls and found that thee worlds largest supplier hop related products could take care of most of my rhizome needs. He could not supply me with all the Cascade and a couple other rhizomes that I wanted but was able to take care of most everything else. Called to check on shipment!
With orders for rhizomes coming in at a very fast pace, and NOT having received any info on the shipment of the second order, I decided to check with the supplier on the expected shipment date. Dave informed me that he had decided to stop selling wholesale that he was shipping my order from the previous week and that I should find a new source. I didn't like being told "Why should I sell wholesale when I can make twice as much selling retail", but I didn't have a whole lot of choices. | ||||||||||||||||

Rhizomes arrived on the 13th, we started shipping the first rhizomes out on the 14th. The remaining orders that can be taken care of by this shipment will be shipped out on Monday. A second shipment will arrive next week and our remaining orders should be taken care with that shipment. We are suspending the sell of additional rhizomes as we bring a new supplier on board which should be able to supply us with even more varieties and possibly even better rhizomes. Due to the HOP CRISIS of 2007-2008, we are discontinuing a number of our prize winning recipes until an adaquate hop supply is established. We will continue to seek new sources of hops but it doesn't look good. The new harvest is already in the marketplace and lots of varieties are unavailable. I have started the process of changing prices on our Traditional Recipe Packages.
These prices have not been changed in over 3 years. During that time, the following
things have effected the pricing,
the price of Munton's DME has risen by close to 50%, the price of transportation has increased over 25%, inclusion of leaf or plug hops in place of pellitized hops for the FLAVORING and AROMATIC additions, and hops prices have sky rocketed during the last 4-6 months due to poor harvest in Europe and a fire in Yakama that destroyed high alpha hop storage facilities. The complicated routine that is required to evaluate and calculate pricing on composite items (recipe packages) is my excuse for delaying the inevitable. In some ways, I was hoping that shipping cost and product cost would recede to previous levels - this has not happening and probably happens very seldom. To keep prices as low as possible, I have lowered my margins permanently and to illustrate what the packages prices would be if items were purchased individually, I have posted an "a la carte price". Thank you for your understanding and your patronage. I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. | ||||||||||||||||

90-minute Double Pale Ale and Gemini Double Pale These recipes are extremely high on the IBU charts but absolutely great beers when consumed young - that is right young. Drink up as soon as you get them carbonated and don't plan on keeping them around for a while - isn't happening. They are that good! | ||||||||||||||||
